Building up connections in the mind of the learner; a method to improve mathematics’ understanding
Understanding in mathematics is mainly concerned with building up connections between mathematical concepts. Literature reveals if we are succeeded in embedding one mathematical concept into another then this lead to better understanding in mathematics. In pursuance of this idea twenty pre-lectures were prepared from grade 10th level mathematics textbook keeping in view the predictions of information processing model. In each pre-lecture efforts were made to build up connections between the previous, existing and coming mathematical concepts. To find out the effectiveness of pre-lectures and to in-depth the students concepts twenty post-tests were prepared keeping in view Blooms’ taxonomy. The subjects of this study consisted of two secondary schools in Cantt/ Garrison setup Peshawar Pakistan. The whole sample (n=114) consisted of boys (n=78) and girls (n=36). The boys’ sample (n=78) further divided into with pre-lecture group (n=39) and without pre-lecture group (n=39). Similarly the girls’ sample further divided into with pre-lecture group (n= 18) and without pre-lecture group (n=18). The data collection was continued through out the whole academic session 2011-12. The data analysis was made by using t-test at 5% level of significance. The results revealed as whole the students with pre-lecture performed significantly better than the students without pre-lecture. The findings outlined that the use of pre-lecture strengthened mathematical connections, which further enhanced their understanding in mathematics.

Three of the intact classes were from public schools and three from private schools. The students were assessed on 7 skills on planning task. Thus each student was expected to exhibit 7 skills in the planning task. The independent t-test, means and percentages were used to analyze data. The results of the study showed that students of JHS from the private schools performed better on the planning task as compared with students of JHS from the public schools. As a result of these findings, it was recommended that hands-on activities in the laboratory should be given a second look on our curriculum. Hands-on activities need to be encouraged more in Junior High Schools in Cape Coast Metropolis.

An n-dimensional pseudo-differential type operator involving Hankel type transformation
In this paper Bessel type differential operator and an n-dimensional pseudo-differential type operator involving the n-dimensional Hankel type transformation is defined. The symbol class is introduced. It is shown that pseudo-differential type operators associated with symbols belonging to this class are continuous linear mappings of the n-dimensional Zemanian space into itself. An integral representation for the pseudo-differential operator is obtained. By using the Hankel type convolution, it is shown that the pseudo-differential type operator satisfies a certain norm inequality.

An investigation of counsellor burnout levels and intervention strategies in public and private universities in Uasin Gishu County, Kenya
Institutional counsellors, like all mental health professionals are at a high risk of suffering burnout. High caseloads and job role ambiguity increase their propensity for burnout. The purpose of this study was to establish counsellor burnout levels in public and in private universities in Uasin Gishu County. The target population comprised of counsellors from all public and private universities in Uasin Gishu County. The Maslach Burnout Inventory Questionnaire (MBIQ) was used to collect data. The study established that burnout levels among counsellors in the public universities were found to be higher than in the private universities. The caseloads handled by counsellors in public universities were generally higher than those of their counterparts in private universities due to the student-counsellor ratio in public universities which was higher than the recommended ratio. Counsellor Training Institutions (CTI) should incorporate burnout theoretical knowledge in the counsellor training curriculum. The findings are significant to the management of universities and other learning institutions in formulating policies on student-counsellor ratio.
